“What’re you doing up there?” The sound of someone’s voice nearly has you falling off the tree branch you’re perched on as your hand flies to chest and a surprised gasp leaves you. You look below you to see a head of messy blonde hair and ocean blue eyes squinting up at you through the sun. You’ve never met him, but recognize him of course, it’s not like the island is particularly big so you’ve seen everyone at least once. Jj Maybank, he’s from the cut so it makes sense that you’ve never really crossed paths. He’s cute though.

“Umm… I’m doing pretty much exactly what it looks like I’m doing, sitting in a tree.” You let out a little small chuckle as you look down at him. “What are you doing down there?”

“Well, I’m exactly what it looks like I’m doing, walking on the ground.” You snort at that, giving him a playful roll of your eyes. “I know, I’m hilarious. I was just makin’ sure you weren’t stuck up there or anything.”

“I mean, I wouldn’t say stuck. I’d say I may have flown too close to the sun climbing up this high.” You shrug as you kick your dangling feet back and forth.

“Soooo… you’re stuck then?” Jj smirks up at you as he adjusts the cap on his head so it’s facing backwards. It gives you a better view of his face, he’s cute. Maybe if you weren’t already so invested in Rafe you would definitely be interested in him.

“I mean, mentally? Yes. Physically? No. I could get down whenever I want, actually.” Your voice is sickly sweet and Jj wonders why he’s never talked to you before. He’s seen you around and he’s always thought you were hot. That whole semi creepy but still angelic vibe you give off really does it for him.

“Yeah? You need some help?” He chuckles and leans his hand against the trunk of the tree, out stretching his neck and accentuating his jaw. He looks like he’d be nice to bite.

“She’s good, Maybank.” Your head whips around to see Rafe walking down the dirt path with a stone cold look set on his face. “I can help my girl. You can fuck off now.”

“Rafey! Hi!” You smile wide as you wave down at him enthusiastically. You sent him a picture of you up in the tree telling him you might need a little help getting down and he immediately dropped everything to come to your rescue.

“Rafey, huh? That’s adorable, truly.” Jj smirks at Rafe and it has him breathing out hard through his nostrils. He’s been trying really hard not to beat every man who looks at you to a pulp but seeing fucking Jj Maybank smirking up at you while you giggle is making him see red.

“Shut the fuck up, Pogue. Didn’t I tell you to fuck off? I suggest you do before we have an actual problem.” Rafe takes a few steps towards him, his eyes are like blue fire as he glares at Jj like he wants to burn him alive. It’s kind of hot. If you’re being honest with yourself.

“Okaaaay, I think that’s enough. I’m good Jj, thank you for offering to help me, you’re sweet.” You give him a saccharine smile and it makes him swoon just a little. You are so cute that if he wasn’t trying to stay off the cops radar he would probably stand here and fuck with Rafe even more.

“Yeah, no problem, sweetheart. See ya around, let me know if pretty boy over here decides to fuck you over, I don’t mind being your rebound.” Jj bites his lip as he winks at you before turning to walk off. Rafe wants to chase after him and wipe that smug ass look off his face by shoving it into the dirt.

“Raaaafe.” You snap your fingers to get his attention and it pulls him out of his rage filled trance. He looks up at you, smiling down at him so sweetly and he almost forgets who Jj Maybank even is. Almost. He still wants to kick his fucking ass.

“Hmm? Yeah baby?”

“Can you help me get down now?” He giggle and Rafe swears it’s his favorite sound other than when you scream for him while you fall apart in his cock.

“Oh shit, yeah. C’mere.” Rafe moves so he’s directly under you with his arms outstretched. “Jump down, I’ll catch you.”

“I don’t know, Rafe. I’m pretty high up.” Your expression turns nervous so Rafe leans up so he can hit the bottom of your shoe with the tips of his fingers.

“You’re not even that high, see? Just fuckin’ jump. Promise I won’t let you fall.” He shakes his hands above his head and gives you that semi goofy, reassuring smile that’s reserved only for you.

“Okay. Fine.” You let out a dramatic sigh before bracing your hands on the branch so you can push yourself down into Rafe’s arms. A little squeal leaves you when he grips onto your hips and pulls you against his chest. You wrap your arms around his neck so you can plant a messy smooch on his lips. “My savior!! How will I ever repay you, fair knight?”

“Pft. You’re so fuckin’ dramatic.” Rafe snorts as he lightly sets you down on the ground.

“I’m dramatic? You were about to beat Jj’s ass for trying to help me!” You laugh, jokingly pushing your hand into his shoulder.

“Nah, he was doing more than just trynna help you.” Rafe grabs onto your hand so he can pull you closer against his chest. “He was fucking flirting with you and you’re mine.”

“Yours, huh? Guess I missed the letter in the mail that said we were official.”

“Oh my god, you’re so dumb.” Rafe throws his head back with a groan but you can see the smile painted across your lips. “I thought I made it pretty fuckin’ clear that you’re my girl.”

“Hmmm… I don’t know, might need you to spell it out for me.” Your giggle makes butterflies erupt in his stomach and Rafe never believed in that butterflies in your tummy bullshit until he met you.

“Ugh. You’re a brat, you know that?” You shrug, letting out a satisfied hum. “Fine. Be my girlfriend?”

“Uh, duh, I already am.” He rolls his eyes and you give him a satisfied smile. “Just wanted to hear you say it.”

“You’re sooo in for it when we get back to my place. Brat.” He grips onto your neck, pulling your lips against his in a rough kiss. “Car. Let’s go.”

“Okay, okay, sooo bosssy.” He smacks your ass and you yelp, running full speed toward his truck.

BYERLY VORRUTYER of Lois McMaster Bujold’s Vorkosigan Saga

Tried to go for a rapidly-aging prettyboy with the gothic heavy lidded eyes (idk how to describe the eyes I’m talking about) and a face that reads as male while having something slightly feminine about it. A face that smiles often but is composed, cool. Slightly wavy black hair that is either shortish, chin length, or slightly shorter than shoulder length (I haven’t decided yet 😅)

Designing faces is not my strong suit so I am working backwards from a few references I like. Will probably simplify artstyle, slightly lengthen hair and mix with a dash of Professor Venom from OK KO (for that little bit of haggard twink energy) to creat the final design.

Wardrobe:

Materials: silk, velvet, ruffles lace, detailed embroidery, military piping, sheer cloth, fur — echoes of beautiful luxurious handmade traditional artisan clothing- but all a little to gaudy and cheaply produced - the barrayaran aristocrat version of fast fashion. Androgynous and galactic styles occasionally thrown in to add to mystique

-SHIRTS: silk shirts // shirts with poofy or frilly sleeves // patterned shirts // sheer shirts // velvet shirts // shirts that are tucked in the pants but so unbuttoned the entire chest exposed

- SUITS: velvet suits that absolutely reek of cologne // sleezy yet sharp barreyaran style black suits you might smoke a cigar or play pool in // pastel suit for daytime garden parties

WARDROBE ACCENTS

- bigass fur coat - maybe even almost a midieval king robe

- several offensively knock off fast fashionmilitary style jackets

- luxuriously patterned bathrobe

- see through shawl / wrap / night robe thing

- some gaudy galactic style outfits

- a few sexy or frilly dresses to piss off the family

- a few a casual / slightly more subdued blend of komarran, barrayaran and practical galactic clothing he only really wears at home (stuff he wears when he’s not preforming for an audience). maybe some sentimental pieces. What’s hidden beneath the camouflage.

- some bling: rings and earrings. A few broaches and cuff links probably not that many necklaces

EDIT: here are some reference collages I put together! Note that these references aren’t the exact items that he would have in his closet but rather there are aspects to each piece that I would want to incorporate into his design. Maybe it’s the cut of a sleeve, the silhouette of a coat, the way a robe drapes, the embroidery pattern on some fabric, or the general partied-too-hard vibes of a particular photo of a model.

A lot of these aspects would then be mixed with my own head cannon for the rules/cuts of barreyaran mens clothing (I went to a library and spent a stupid insane amount of time looking through books with midieval, 1800s and 1900s men’s fashions and France, Russia, and Greece- + additional books of traditional folk clothings and textile patterns + several other books of historic military uniforms…. The process and choices were so long that I had to give up and just stop thinking about any sort of vorkosigan related character design for a couple months cuz my head hurt. - I will probably make another post at some point with more annotated collages and possibly some of my own drawings synthesizing the concepts, but uh not right now because I need a nap just thinking about trying to organize it all.)

2 for both characters and world, 1 for plot, and 3 for meta :DDDD (you dont have to do all of these LMAOOO)

What do the characters look/dress like?

The story takes place in early 2010s, as everyone is around their mid to early 20s. Bing's the oldest so they'd be about 30 now?? I think?? Everyone has their own style, but it does strictly follow 2000s fashion cuz of their age! Like an idiot, I've never bothered drawing character sheets as no character has set clothing.. but I can boards I created for a general idea of what they'd wear!

Bing;

Warm, heavy clothing you'd almost consider for mountain wear. Thick boots, lots of flannel. Not exactly a very fashionable person, but they get by with what they got.

Salem;

Modest, loose fitting dresses. Doesn't like wearing pants simply because they feel uncomfortably tight (no matter how baggy). Very much spring esc type wear due to the southern heat.

Samuel;

More retro esc clothes leaning closer to the 80s! Considerably, childish t-shirts paired with the shortest shorts. The football jock!

Stanley;

Lots of sports jackets & shoes like Nike & Adidas. While it seems like his clothes are name-brand most of them are from Goodwill or fakes lol.

What are the visuals/aesthetics of this story?

What is the plot of this story?

Around '07, a car was found totalled near the outskirts of Columbia, SC. The vehicle was in such disarray that it looked almost as though it had been warped into the tree it had collided into. Branches protruded out of it's windshield, as glass laid upon the forest floor. Only one of the victim's was known to be conscious, later confirmed to be the driver, who for whatever reason had not called for help. It was presumed they had sat there instead, in a state of shock, until help arrived. In sheer terror, they stared, watching the life bleed out of their passenger's eyes.. Listening to the gurgling sobs, as his jaw lay slack. 4 hours. They did nothing for 4 hours.

They never came to his funeral.

Time did nothing but further erod his sister's mind; a shell of a woman was all she was. Yet with time can prosperity, as that husk became something more. A solution. Justice.

How does the medium inform the storytelling?

I HAVE... NO IDEA WHAT THIS MEANS.. if it's regarding how the story is being told, I don't really know? as much as I love this story, I don't know if I have the full capability to write or produce the high level content I want to make. I would love to turn it into an actual ARG but, to be honest, I don't think I have the time or talent to pull that off :(

the most I think I can do is just Tumblr rambles, tbh, as nothing I produce will properly match what is going on inside my brain. hey, maybe I might bring the game back? (most likely not BUTT it's a nice thought). The best way I can explain how I'd LIKE for the ARG would be similar to lasagna cat? or the DAD arg. Like, I don't exactly enjoy up front analog horror. I want to create something where when you first watch it it's like, "wtf was that?" yk??? Similar to to Jack Stauber's content, I want it to be weird/unnerving but not on purpose. It's something you really have to go digging for story telling content. It's not supposed to make sense as it's all content directly from a woman who is slowly losing her mind.

What are these characters relationships to each other?

Salem & Stanley are infact siblings! Along with that, Bing is Samuel's older, albeit adopted, sibling. Despite being the oldest, Bing has always had a close connection with their brother's friends, whom he met in highschool. They were always seen as the "mature" role model. Finally, Salem & Bing could technically count as partners , or even exes, as they have pending feelings for each other for a while. However, neither of them really admit to that.. The most you could say they are is a situationship who have hooked up in the past.

GENERALLY, i like to daydream about my work. i think there's only been a handful of times where i jump into the thing IMMEDIATELY. i'll make pinterest boards or playlists or try to at least map it out with someone/myself, then i'll probably start on a sentence, leave it like that for a week until i find it again and abandon the fic that i did the same thing to! it's a whole cycle jfsdjv

hhh it depends! i usually always have the beginning and the end played out, and in a rare case somewhat of the middle. and occasionally, if i do have the beginning, middle, and end planned out i'll try to stick with it but if i want to change smth as i'm writing it i'll go ahead and do it,,,,,

i've been listening to a few different things, but mainly my serenity playlist (even if i'm not writing serenity) aaand occasionally my dsmp playlist cause dsmp music is my guilty pleasure skfsddsc,,, i also like listening to the neighborhood's masterplaylist

18 : do you enjoy research? which fic of yours required the most research?

i do like research, it's fun to take a break from writing so my attention can stay on it longer lol

aaand i think so far swapped has been taking the most research! because a. he's a borrower so i have to look up more simplified words for things, b. there's a fucking language barrier so i've been looking up ways to write it, and c. i've been thinking sooo much about things to include in reference to their body swapping to make emduo & beeduo more skeptical,,,,

22 : do you title your fics before, during, or after the writing process?  how do you come up with titles?

generally i'll do it afterwards, i think serenity & soot house are the only ones that i've named beforehand as of recent. i had written curiosity months before i posted it as a non g/t fic and titled it really quickly. when i wrote in my notes i did think of titles first, but now it's always after! and i don't usually come up with them on my own, i use the oh hello or hoizer generator puzzle recommended to me :) tho i did come up with swapped all on my own after like 20 minutes of searching through songs to just land on smth of my own ejsdfjds

aaand i think you meant all the ones between 22 & 30 so WOW let's go

23 : is writing the beginning, middle, or end of the story easiest? hardest?

the easiest is the beginning because depending on how you start it it'll almost always have a clean flow, then the end because wrapping things up can be kind of difficult but still pretty clean, and then the middle cause idk wtf to put there i didn't plan that far ahead </3

24 : how do you choose whose pov to write in?

hhhh i haven't really thought about it! i usually jump in with the protagonist cause yk it's the easiest. and if i want another story to be told i'll switch povs! it genuinely just comes easy for me with pov switching so i don't put a ton of thought into it,,,,

25 : what’s your favorite part of the writing process (worldbuilding, brainstorming/outlining, writing, editing, etc)?

brainstorming/worldbuilding fs, making visuals is always such a fun experience and answering questions to make the world more defined,,,, and writing ofc is also pretty fun of course cause wooo it's coming alive!!

26 : what’s your least favorite part of the writing process?

i'm not patient enough to read through my 1.3k fics so i almost never, and that's why i got a proofreader for swapped fejsdjs

i think i'm answering this question correctly by saying scenes? the whole process of adding useless description to some things is really fun and i find that if i get it write i can be good at it!

dialogue and foreshadowing! dialogue can be so hard and not just cause it's fic, but because i have trouble balancing my description and dialogue,, i'll add 2 paragraphs of description or internal dialogue stuff before i give a response to a characters question lol

swapped lol it's 9k words which is way out of my usual word count and the language barrier was a bitch, keeping the writing fluent and making appropriate responses to wilbur's confusion was really difficult in my opinion for the same reason as my answer to q28

if i says swapped one m- my favorite title is the one for swapped! "the waves of the sea (to change or to leave be?)" is pretty cool cause i did reference the ocean a few times in the fic so yeee

i really want to write that botanist!wilbur & naga!tommy thingy, also the fake fic title thingy with tommy as a test subject that ends at different heights during the day depending on the tests,,, i think that'd be cool! also the one where sapnap noms george and just constantly irritates him LMAO

i write giants/humans curling their fingers around the edge of a counter a lot, no idea why

i'm pretty conscious of it, but there have been a lot of times where i accidentally add things like oh shit i didn't even mean for that to be foreshadowing or symbolism but it works!

hhh not really, i usually know what'll do well and what probably won't. but i wasn't really expecting hush to do so well! and i sure as hell didn't expect any of my fics to hit 100+ notes asjfjsd

i feel so (emotionally) empty and dull wtf... i don't wanna cry or nothing i just wanna disappear with no disturbance, to be in full isolation with nothing but 4 walls

on the plus side, i put my hair in a really cute low bun, but i think it's falling out or moving bc it's getting looser and starting to pull now. for context i never do my hair, it pure hates me so i'd normally just detangle it and then leave as is.

uno it's bad when your "me and who" pinterest board is just pictures of people being friends... so fucking disheartening to tell adults, both family and teachers, no, i won't enjoy my last day, or any days of school, nor my school holidays, because i have no friends. i do genuinely enjoy listening to their stories of them and their mates but they all refuse to listen one bit when i tell them i won't be enjoying mine. the teachers try and say shit like "of course you do (have friends)" and "i didn't have many friends either", yet go on to explain their friend group of 20+ people, their 3 best friends, all the parties they got invited to, their 2 different boyfriends and how they went to uni on the bank of mum and dad, making at least 20 more pals that they talk to weekly till this day.

literally my best and only pal is my 11y/o cousin and that doesn't even count for anything because we're related man. i used to be close with his sister, my 15y/o cousin but we just don't hang out at all like whatsoever, even at functions. i do love her sm still, i always make sure to buy her treats when shes on her period, check up on her when shes ill and ensure shes safe and happy. i'll also just gift her for no reason so she has higher standards for her future boyfriends, she really doesn't pick the thoughtful ones at all. either way, she's heavily motivated to do go on and make lots of money and go into further education, difficult jobs ect. so i don't worry too much, i know she has her head screwed on.

most of the time i have to pretend the concept of best friends is just a concept, simply a movie trope, to stop myself from breaking down. i full course envy every single person whos had a best friend, one that actually enjoys your company, even if that best friend doesn't reciprocate (as in count you as their best friend), i envy you 😭 i literally just long for someone who doesn't mind my company. not even someone who likes my company, just someone who tolerates it. how fucking sad is that

i genuinely don't think anyone at all classes me as a friend, and anyone who could be a friend has never wanted to talk outside of school despite having my snap, email and insta, and i know every last one of them has chat shit about me minimum twice, every single one. i've never harmed any of these people physically nor mentally, all my previous friends (not exactly a decent sample size, i can count them on my hands) that fucking hate my guts still admit i'm one of the kindest people they know and that i'm a great friend, supportive, useful and funny, it's literally because i'm unattractive and neurodivergent that people don't like me i swear down 😭 i asked someone to reword a sentence once and they gave me death stares for 2 years and still chat shit to this day bro. at least there was actual reason for this one i spose, usually it comes from fucking nowhere

so i haven't watched batter up but i've seen clips and that's basically the same thing, and from what i've seen... i'm not missing out on very much lol. like let's start out with the yg EYE remember, with the most fashion-forward, trendy groups out there - they had an edge that couldn't be imitated for a very long time. 2NE1's collaborations with jeremy scott and adidas are still legendary, i think they really established a real connection for what kpop fashion could really be (at least for the second gen)

but everyone knows by now that they've pretty much gotten comfortable with where they are - meanwhile, the hip-hop baddie hood unnie concept has been ran thru since at least 2013. everyone has the same access to the same sound and the same pinterest boards and the same set design or whatever

but they don't want to adapt! bc they know how loyal stans can be to their groups, and therefore they can keep peddling the same reject songs they've had for 10 years. batter up sounds like it could have been released by blackpink in 2018 right along with ddu du ddu du. and though it would be kind of insulting to say it could be a 2NE1 song, i can hear them on it too

but what yg doesn't know is that the only reason their stans are so dedicated is because the individual members can stand on their own. at least in big bang, 2NE1, and blackpink's case, which leads me to another problem yg has, managing groups with more than 5 members. winner is an exception to this rule because mino is really the only one who stands out to me. then you have ikon with bobby being the most recognizable member. and treasure... no one knows wtf they're doing with those fiftyleven members... i genuinely could not pick any of them out of a lineup... you could point to any nugu kpop boy and say he's in treasure and i'd be like yeah sure. and with babymonster (i really love this name btw), i would say the standout is pharita? maybe? but everyone else kinda fades into the background. they need a Role, something that makes them an essential part of the group. yg used to understand how to do this, but they've lost it in recent years. babymonster will lowkey be fine bc they had their little webseries thing that made people become weirdly attached to them predebut. but if they didn't debut this year after all the delays their hype train would have died down hard.

but when blackpink debuted, it was huge because it was the first yg girl group since 2009, 2NE1 was basically being punished for being old hags (only half kidding), it was time for FUTURE 2NE1!!!!!!!! but we now see that yg is really just terrible at managing girl groups, so this debut just doesn't seem appropriately timed. debuts in general don't feel huge or important anymore. like sm just debuted a new boy group a couple months ago and it's... crickets (which is kinda nct's fault but that's a topic for another day). call it oversaturation or whatever but you really have to be doing some crazy shit for people to gaf about new groups. newjeans was maybe the last debut that made some noise because surprise drops are pretty unheard of in kpop.

but yeah yg kinda just lost its entire flavor. they're a legacy label of course, but the only thing that's keeping them relevant rn is blackpink, and if they leave, well... you know. hybe took their spot in the big 3, if anyone even still believes in that anymore. side note, this will never happen to sm btw. that's not even the pink blood in me (ew) i genuinely believe if sm were to fall, it would have happened a long time ago. jyp (the company) stays in the big 3 because twice and also jyp (the man) is egregiously fame-hungry. he would do anything and everything to keep his name in the streets

Her pinterest is loaded with cool, spectualtive stuff. Some makes a lot of sense to me. You can easily look at some pins and know exactly who or what it is. Others I'm like wtf does this mean??? I check it occasionally but tbh her boards stress me out it's just chaotic if you see mine you'll see why. Most of my boards are organized and if they're not it's because I'm working on organizing them.

Case in point this "Azriel & Mor" actually, yeah let's talk about that. Like I said the further you scroll down her boards the more you'll end up seeing things like this. We obviously know Az x Mor aren't going to happen. That's been burned many times. But the images are still up there on her pinterest. Some could be for friendship. Most are probably still there just because she has to scroll and scroll and scroll to find them and delete. Let me tell you, it's a pain the ass to do when your boards are disorganized. It's time consuming to delete those. I don't blame her for keeping them up. I wouldn't bother with it either.

how did you get into writing fic? i'd love to start but idk even where to begin! I loved adats so I was wondering do you have any advice?

Oh my goodness! I am so flattered you’ve asked me this. Yes, I can absolutely help. I’ll throw a bunch of rambling under the cut.

I started writing fic probably when I was... sixteen years old? A lot of my early works were oneshots. I couldn’t figure out how to do anything plot heavy for the life of me, so I just stuck to AUs or whatever I felt like. I wasn’t in any particular fandom -- I really wrote whatever I had ideas for. I remember I tried once to do a plot-heavy story and I received a review absolutely ripping it to shreds. Like, it was so cruel I cried lol. I ended up deleting the fic. Years later, I get what they were trying to say (basically, more substance, less style), but at the time it cut to the quick. Really, it was only when I was in my twenties that I started writing work that was longer and/or better.

The fandom that helped me actually write plot heavy work was a historical-based fandom. As I’m a historian, it was perfect. I got to use my research skills and knowledge to create works that, above all, aimed to feel authentic. I mainly read historical fiction, so I was familiar with how that genre worked. Miraculously, people loved my work. I think I wrote about ~200k in the period of a year? These were several short stories (20-40k) and a few oneshot filler fics. While I was part of this fandom I also helped organise a Big Bang which was a lot of hard work but was extremely rewarding. Along with that, I interacted mainly with other fic writers, so I spent a lot of time chatting to people about ideas and encouraging other writers, and it just created a lovely medley where no concept was impossible or any line of dialogue too difficult. We supported each other and it was truly like a little commune. I gradually stepped away from the fandom mainly because it was just a part of my life at a very specific time, and almost as soon as that time was over, my love for that story/ship faded, but I firmly believe I figured out a lot of how/what I do now purely through that experience.

Regarding ADATS

With ADATS, it stemmed entirely from wanting to “explain” three months in canon (at the end of season three). I was interested in the idea of season four setting up Will/Mike in canon, and I wanted to test the source material to see if I could draw from what already existed to create something authentic. I began with that simple idea: what happened from July to October in 1985? Then I thought about the major themes I wanted to hit -- family, friendship, coming of age, sexuality -- and I nested them around the bigger concept: how do I get Mike from being ostensibly straight to realising he is gay? That meant thinking of two steps: Mike discovering his attraction to guys; Mike discovering his attraction to Will. Those two concepts were separate “arcs” that needed addressing in different ways. Balance was key to weaving them together and making the reader feel like they knew what was coming (and that they felt smart for putting the pieces together) without just rushing through and going “now kiss!” That’s partly why ADATS needs a sequel, lol: because it’s not finished!

Writing process

The first thing I do when I start to get an idea is I write it down. Sounds obvious. But when you have a killer line of dialogue come to you in the shower and you think “I’ll remember that” -- reader, you will not remember it. You gotta get it down ASAP! I do that the whole way through, as generally I’ll be thinking of scenes I’m stuck on and then it’ll just come to me and I’ll quickly jot it down.

The next thing -- or what I do in the meantime -- is start structuring. I plan. I try to plan a lot. Sometimes it’s okay to write “and something happens here to get them here”, because you’ll figure it out later, but for the most part I’ve discovered that planning is like gold and you can’t get enough of it. I break my work up into generally 3-4 parts/sections, and I treat each section like a mini story. So each part needs a conflict and resolution, and it needs to flow into the next section. You need to have a feeling of things evolving and maturing. Once I’ve planned those little bits, I start thinking about the bigger plot arc and how I can drop in hints along the way. I’m probably not a subtle or skilled enough writer to yet pull off that sort of gasping twist you get in really excellent books, but I’m trying to get there. It’s hard, is what I’m trying to say, but that’s okay, because we’re all learning.

Then I generally do aesthetic stuff. Sounds stupid, probably. But nothing helps me get more into a mood than doing a Pinterest board or -- most of all -- making a Spotify mix. I start thinking about the vibe and the general atmosphere, and then I almost exclusively listen to that mix when I’m working. Sort of like muscle memory? Just to get the creative juices associated with that particular selection of songs.

Another thing I’ll do along with plot structure is character structure. This is a biggie. I mean, a story is nothing without characters. So I’ll just jot down a bunch of bullet points of characters and particular aspects that I want to highlight or remember. I hate continuity errors in fiction. Like, if someone says they work on Maple Street but later in the fic they’re working on Pine Street. I hate that. So I keep note of specific things that my main character might notice at repeated points in the story (colours, places, smells, names, sounds -- so they’re all consistent even as the narrative evolves). That’s another thing -- your characters’ motivations. Not everyone is going to be a huge player, but they all do serve a purpose. The most important character is obviously your main character. I personally think it’s important to let your M.C. be an arse at times. They’re going to be mean, they’re going to misinterpret things or fly off the handle... just let ‘em. Let them be wretched humans, and then bring them back and make them realise what they’ve done. Let them learn! I love consequences in fiction, lol.

At the same time, I’ll probably start writing. We’ve already written down some snippets of neat dialogue or descriptions, but now we should start the actual process. For me, I used to start at the beginning. Usually this was the most fleshed out anyway: I’ll have a clear idea of the beginning and the end, but nothing in the middle. These days, if I have a scene in mind that I can’t forget, I’ll just write it. It will possibly get scrapped or rewritten, but that’s okay, because at least you’ve got it down and now you can devote your brain power to something useful (like figuring out what the middle is supposed to be). I’ll have half a dozen of totally out of context scenes just littered in my Word document that I’ll add to as I go along. Eventually, though, you’re going to start writing properly, and that’s when you write your opening scene.

Opening scenes: super important. Every time I write a scene I think: what is the point of this? What do I want the reader to learn or takeaway? Sometimes you do have filler scenes, but they also serve a different purpose (perhaps to establish a group dynamic or to explore/describe a character’s surroundings). Mainly, though, every scene should push something forward in some way, whether it’s character development or a plot point. So, with an opening scene, I always think you have to establish: where you are; who you are; what they are doing; where they’ve come from (in a philosophical and practical sense); and where they’re going (ditto). That doesn’t have to happen in the first paragraph -- that would be silly. But if you sprinkle that information in over time it’ll gradually build up a picture of your character and that way the reader can get an idea of who they are. You basically need to give a snapshot of what your story is about. This also goes back to the character creator stuff: where they are at the start should be different to where they end up. How that happens is, of course, because of plot, and because you’ve structured everything to the nth degree, we’ve got a very clear progression of that character’s growth (/s easier said than done lol).

General advice

Write down everything: every idea, a bit of dialogue, a description, whatever. Write it down. Doesn’t have to be neat. Just has to be on paper. You can’t remember everything, so if you’re spending time trying to hold those things in your head, it’s taking up space for new ideas to come along.

Structure, plan, structure, plan. Sometimes it’s boring and I hate it. Other times, when I’ve not written in a few days and I open the Word doc and think wtf is this supposed to be, I am very grateful for Past Me for leaving such detailed notes. Seriously, it helps so much. Oneshots don’t really need planning, in my experience. You just get those out there. But multi-chaptered stories really do, even ones that “just” focus on a relationship.

Whatever you want to write, commit to it. Space goblins invade Hawkins? Do it. Eleven and Max find themselves in a cult akin to Midsommar (2019) and must escape? Yes. Just... whatever you want to do, remember that you’re writing it for you. Write what most interests you, what makes you when you reread it go AHHHHH I LOVE THIS!! Because that makes it a thousand times easier to actually get on with the writing when you enjoy what you’re doing.

Write a lot. Every day, if you can, or at least at designated times. Occasionally I have a very specific headspace/vibe I have to be in, but sometimes it just hits me and I’ll say to my partner “I need to write now” and just disappear, lol. The more you write the more you write. It’s so, so, so true. Cannot emphasise this enough. When I wrote that ~200k in twelve months? It was because I literally wrote every. day. Or near enough. Remember that some days you’ll write 200 words, and other days you’ll write 20k (this happened to me with ADATS -- part of the reason I finished it so quickly was because I had sprints of writing 10k+ at a time that only happened because I was in the rhythm of it). Write, write, write. Who cares if it’s crap! No one will see it until you are ready. In the meantime, just write!

Probably last of all (although I could go on and on) is connect with other writers. If you’re struggling to start, sometimes just talking about it can help a huge amount. I hope it goes without saying that you can message me whenever you want, anon or not, and I will talk to you. We can talk about ideas or I can beta stuff, whatever you want! Find like-minded people and talk to them about what you want to do. Another thing this helps is in advertising your work when you do publish. I see a lot of first time fic writers get super down because they publish their magnum opus on AO3 but no one comments. Honestly, it’s because no one knows you’ve published! You don’t have to be tooting your own horn every which way, but just actively talking about your work and even collaborating with other content creators with get you hyped and other people too (and the input and encouragement other fandom members give is just... out of this world. Anon messages helped me finish ADATS when I was really worried I wouldn’t [that’s the truth]. Seriously, support is everything). When you have people excited about your work, you get excited. It’s really as simple as that.
